In 1957 he graduated from the Art Pedagogical College of the city of Ordzhonikidze and worked as a teacher of technical drawing and graphics at the secondary art school of the village of Chermen.
From 1958 to 1964 he studied at the Leningrad State University of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. I.Y. Repin (I.E. Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture) at the Department of Painting. Joseph Serebriany was one of his teachers.
After graduating from the distribution institute, he was sent to the city of Kokand, Uzbekistan. Since 1964 he has been teaching at the Kokand State Pedagogical Institute. Participates in city, republican and all-union exhibitions. From 1965 to 1971 he was a member of the regional Art Council of the city of Kokand. For the creation of a monument to the fighters of the revolution in 1966 he was awarded a diploma of the Kokand city committee.

Hamza for the creation of the
monumental sculpture "Ikar"
In 1968 he was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSRthe Union of Artists of the USSR.
From 1969 to 1971 he worked as a teacher in the Kokand art pedagogical school.
In 1972, he moved to Tashkent with his family. He works at the Combine of Sculpture and Monumental Art of the Art Fund and at the experimental plant of the Ministry of Culture of Uzbekistan. In these years he creates a number of monumental works, participates in republican and all-Union exhibitions, and also takes part in international sculpture competitions.
In 1988, he takes part in the First All-Union Symposium of Stone Sculpture, which was held in Ashgabat.
Since 1991 — Member of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan.
1988−2002 - active work on the creation of monumental works in the cities of Tashkent, Bukhara, Nukus, Yangibazar.
Robert Avakyan died on June 14, 2002. He was buried in Tashkent at City Cemetery No. 1 (the territory of the so-called "communist cemetery").
Despite the fact that he was an artist-painter by training, his talent was clearly manifested in the creation of graphic works, and Robert Avakyan was best known as a sculptor and creator of monumental compositions.
Robert Avakyan was born July 18, 1932 in Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz), North Ossetia–Alania. His father
was public servant. He received his primary art education at the A.S. Pushkin City Art School.
